Iodine + Folic Acid + Iron + B12
An adequate supply of iodine, iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 matters for health, performance and wellbeing u2014 especially for women of childbearing age, pregnant and breastfeeding women, older adults, and anyone who only irregularly eats folate-rich leafy greens, iodine-containing foods (like fish), or iron- and B12-rich animal foods (like meat). Germany’s national dietary survey found that adequate intake of iodine, iron and folic acid isn’t always achieved.
- Iodine contributes to normal thyroid hormone production and normal thyroid function.
- Folic acid contributes to normal immune function and normal blood formation, and plays a role in cell division u2014 particularly relevant for women trying to conceive or who are pregnant.
- Iron contributes to normal red blood cell formation and normal immune function.
- Vitamin B12 plays a role in cell division and supports normal red blood cell formation, also helping reduce tiredness and fatigue alongside folic acid.
Why these specific nutrients: plant foods contain almost no iodine (Central European soils were leached of iodine during the Ice Age, leaving the region iodine-poor), and plant-based B12 sources are minimal, so anyone eating little or no animal food should pay particular attention to B12 intake.
